Are Big Trees A Danger To Your House?

We are often called out to evaluate big trees, to determine if they are dangerous, and to make recommendations. Often times, trees that have gotten quite big, and if they have never been pruned properly over the years, can start to look very scary, overweight, like they could break at any time.

But how could a normal person, and not a tree professional, really know that? Well if you look up at a tree, and you start getting anxious, that is a sign. You start thinking to yourself, “man, that tree looks heavy. I wonder if it could break?”

Most of our customers, when they call us out, have already been thinking that for a while. Especially if the tree is looming over property, over something that would be damaged if it fell or broke. The point is, if the tree looks scary looking, if you are worried about it, it is very likely that your fears are justified, and a call to a tree pro would be a good idea.

Some trees just get really big over time. This actually CAN be ok, actually a positive thing, or it could be a problem, depending. The thing of it is, a big tree can be a heck of an asset to the overall look to the property. They can be stately and beautiful.

Not Trimming Trees Can Cause Problems

Trees that aren’t trimmed usually don’t look too stately. Untrimmed large trees can have a bunch of problems. And the way the problems manifest depends on the variety. Oak trees, for example are super strong, but they are also the heaviest kinds of trees. And their branches get longer and longer, and heavier and heavier over time. At a certain point their branches can just suddenly give way. And ALL big varieties of trees, if they allowed to overgrow, can have issues similar to that oak example.

Another big problem, that I am called out to address all the time, is when these trees grow over the roof of a house or commercial building. This is something that must be pruned back, especially in fire zones.

Dealing With Super-Monster Trees

Once a tree has become a super-monster, we are often called out to evaluate it. And there are usually different things we can do. Sometimes, what we do is to prune it. We reduce the weight of the branches, sometimes by doing a “crown reduction” on it, the crown just being a word for the top of the tree. Sometimes it is possible to reduce that crown to a lower point, making a smaller crown. On our crown reduction page, at the top, there is a before and after pic of a live oak that we reduced the crown on.

Another option, that people often choose, is just to remove the tree entirely. At a certain point, that sometimes is the ONLY option, if the tree has gone too far, is too far out of hand.

And sometimes people, because of the size of these scary trees, can think the best use of their money is to reduce the trees drastically, like cut them 1/2 way down. This is called tree topping, and I usually try to talk them out of this. For one thing it ruins the look of the tree. For another it ruins the tree’s taper, i.e. its strength, which is discussed lower down on my tree trimming techniques page.

Is There A Good Plan To Help Big Trees?

It is just common sense, that the best way to deal with a problem is before it gets crazy out of hand.  But usually, people don’t call until the extreme time, when the tree has gone way too far.  Sometimes until the tree has actually broken.

So the advise would be, if you have a tree that is starting to get a head of steam, control it and lighten it as it goes.  You can call us out anytime.  Consultations are free.
